About Us

We Are The Tradition

Prairie Stitches Quilt Shoppe believes in creating a community of quilters. Kim Nimtz and Susan Deegan have found that rather than hosting one-day classes, quilters form a stronger bond when regularly meeting, and lasting friendships are generated from joining one of the many “Club Quilt” offerings at the store. Meeting monthly with the same people creates enduring relationships. Of course, not everyone lives close enough to Oswego, IL to join Club Quilt – and the other “tradition” that Prairie Stitches offers is a great selection of quilting and appliqué tools, fabrics, patterns and accessories in the online store.

Whether you are an in-store customer planning your next project at the shop’s long wooden farm table, or a web customer sitting comfortably at home, you are part of the Prairie Stitches community, and you are part of the tradition.

Our Shoppe

From the charm of the historical town of Oswego, IL to the welcoming interior of Prairie Stitches Quilt Shoppe, customers far and near look forward to visiting Susan and Kim and their talented staff. Or maybe it’s the lure of the warm farm table that sits in the center of the store. It’s the gathering place for customers to talk about quilting – and more. And “talk” they do – firming up friendships, working out life’s problems, and most importantly, deciding on the next quilting project they want to tackle. From the quilt samples adorning all of the walls, to the wall shelves and kiosks bursting with fabric, to the displays of visiting designers – it’s not hard to find inspiration for that next project!

Wool/Stitchings Customers come from far and wide to enjoy the Wall of Wool. An incredible array of wools in hundreds of hues decorates one of the walls in the shop. Bundled in groups of 10, these wool samples hang four rows deep and 12 bundles wide. Many Prairie Stitches customers end up creating their own Wall of Wool at home by ordering single wool colors as well as entire wool bundles. When planning a wool project, this Wall of Wool becomes the color wheel with which customers can plan the perfect project with every possible shade available.

Oswego, IL is about 45 miles southwest of Chicago, and customers find Prairie Stitches to be an easy trip from many locations in Illinois and beyond.

Oswego, IL

Downtown historic Oswego, IL is nestled on the banks of the Fox River. Originally a stage-coach stop for travelers taking carriages to and from Chicago, Oswego still carries the charm of a small town, but with the proximity to a large city, it is easily accessible by Interstates 80, 88 and 90. Prairie Stitches is on the corner of IL Route 34 and Main Street – a true Main Street shop in a historic wooden building that looks like an old trading post.

Warm weather events in Oswego include the popular Wine on the Fox Festival each May, Prairie Fest each June, and a traditional Father’s Day parade and festival every Father’s Day weekend, along with Art Fair on Main Street in August. When the snow blows, it’s time for the annual Christmas Walk on the first weekend of December, which includes ice carvings, carolers dressed in vintage costumes, and an antique fire engine parade. Oswego is also home to the Little White Schoolhouse Museum, seasonal Sunday Farmers’ Markets, the Village Grind Coffee Shop and many great diners and restaurants. The Emerson Creek Pottery and Tearoom is another favorite draw for locals and out-of-towners as well.
